U13s, Kells Tournament, Group Stages

 8th August 2016

Not only is Oisin Murphy a “goal scoring superstar hero”, but it turns out he’s also a sports journalist in the making. Read Oisin’s account of how our U13s progressed through the group stages of the Kells Tournament this past weekend.

I arrived at Kells Blackwater pitches at 1.15 and met up with the rest of the team. We had a kick about for a while and then Johnny took us for a team talk and warmup. Our first game was at 2.30 p.m. against Parkvilla FC .Their kit was the exact same colour as the Drogheda boys kit so we had to wear yellow bibs. The game started well and about 7 or 8 minutes into the game Hayden played a great through ball into me and I took advantage of the opportunity and placed it in the corner of the goal.

A couple of minutes later the other team had a goal kick. The goalkeeper made a mistake and kicked the ball short for me to control and shoot, it was now 2-0. In the second half against the wind we conceded a goal. We held on to win 2-1.

The next match was against Cavan. We were playing against the wind and it was 0-0 at half time. In the second half we scored 3 goals before the other teams heads dropped and we ended up scoring 7 goals before they scored 1 goal at the very end to make it 7-1.

In the last game our opponents were Melview FC from Longford and our team played amazing. Everyone was passing, doing overlaps and making great runs making the other team confused about what to do. At half time the score was 5-0 to Drogheda boys. We went back out onto the pitch in the second half and scored 6 more goals without conceding. I feel like the team is bonding and that’s good because the knockout stages of the tournament are next week and the league is coming up at the end of the month.
